CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Trouble

I PULLED ALEX’S bike into the park next to my car at King's and switched it off. I’d made it just before daybreak. I’d broken a few speed limits, but the alternative—being caught out in daylight—was far worse.

After kicking the stand down, I walked towards administration, helmet and bike keys in hand. I pulled my room keys and security card out of the front pocket of my bag, but it took the human day guard a few moments to call through to the head of security to clear me, then I was through the main door.

The reception was empty at this time of the morning except for another daytime guard, and I was glad to be inside before the sun rose. I nodded at the human ignoring his slightly too fast heartbeat, and kept moving.

The trip down to basement two felt nostalgic even though it had only been a few days since I’d first arrived. It felt like déjà vu. I stepped out of the stairs, and there was not a single person anywhere.

I walked over to Valentin’s door and knocked. I’d known where he was the minute I’d stepped into the main building, but what he was doing still working at this time of day, I couldn’t guess.

The door swung inwards.

“Morrigan,” he growled, his deep, husky voice rougher than I’d ever heard it.

A slow smirk tilted my lips. It felt just like old times. If old times were like… last night. I shook my head at the ridiculousness of it all and walked into his sparse office.

His coffee and cream scent and his power slammed into me.

A slight noise broke from me at my body’s visceral reaction, my gut tightening, my insides heating.

I caught Valentin's aquamarine gaze, and a slight noise of shock ripped from me at the sudden stinging in my eyes. Shit, I didn’t want to cry. We’d known going in that things like this might happen, and I’d been prepared for them, in theory anyway.

After meeting the heirs and having them at my neck, things felt far more intense than they had when my advisors and I discussed possible outcomes. I waved a hand at Valentin to stop him from coming around the desk and turned away, bending to place my bag and the helmet on the floor.

I sucked in a breath and stood with a hand on one hip and the other rubbing at my eyes. Shit, I was tired. More tired than I’d expected.

“You look like shit, Morrigan. You look… sick.” Valentin sounded concerned under the anger that bled through his deep voice. Our connection, our bond, hadn’t changed in the hours I’d been away. It still wasn’t what I expected it to be.

I huffed out a breath and stayed facing away. "I know. I noticed it at Ravensdale House. I don't know what's wrong. I think it might have to do with changing back from wolf blood to vampire blood, but it’s not like there’s anyone I can ask.” I shrugged and looked down at my hands.
